FASHFEST Special: Q&A with MirandaSAKHINO

The divine designer herself

With only two sleeps till Fashfest 2015, the excitement is palpable.

One of the featured designers this year, Miranda Seakgosing of MrandaSAKHINO will bring colour and fusion of culture to the runway, with prints that quietly echo Africa. Using sustainable fabrics, Miranda's designs are made here in Australia with a conscious appreciation of the modern woman and we all know every woman is remarkably different. 1. Now that you're a new mother, how has that changed the way you work and design?

I have now experienced the style challenges pregnant women and mums in general encounter on a daily basis, so I try to incorporate pieces into my collections that can serve women well throughout every season, without compromising on style. Work-wise, let's just say having a child forces you to get so many more things done in an hour than you ever thought humanly possible. As a mum, your time is limited, so you have to really maximize on those small windows of productivity you get during the day. I guess it makes you appreciate time so much more.

2. Who is the MirandaSAKHINO woman?

The MirandaSAKHINO woman has the ability to see beyond the fashion horizon no matter where she is geographically. She has a love for timeless pieces and does not care much for trends and fads. She is confident in her skin and values elegance and class above all.

3. I love that you fuse African and Western, why was it important for you to blend the two?

Growing up between the two cultures in a mixed race family, I was able to draw inspiration from both. It is just second nature for me as my world has always been a perfect blend of the two.

4. Fashfest is such a great event for designers, new and established what can we expect from your collection?

Yes, Fashfest most definitely provides an incredible platform and opportunity for new and established designers. My new resort collection will be very feminine, and for women who like to make a big statement, quietly.

5. You now live in Melbourne, was there a noticeable cultural difference compared to Canberra?

Oh yes. Having lived in Melbourne for more than a decade and then briefly moving to Canberra was a refreshing change. I loved the change of pace Canberra had to offer (especially as a new parent). Canberra's fashion scene is still growing and it was exciting for me to be part of that growth through awesome initiatives such as Fashfest. That being said, I love being back in Melbourne now, and I feel like the break gave me a fresh perspective on the way I now look at it. I will always have a special and strong connection with Canberra though.

6. Can women do it ALL and do we really need to?

Yes, most definitely. As long as "DOING IT ALL" means living out your purpose in life and pursuing what you are passionate about. However, as women, we need not put ourselves under pressure to prove something to society or meet some unrealistic standard. We need to just accept our femininity and learn to appreciate and acknowledge the power that comes with that. Having a good support base makes a big difference as to what can be accomplished, as well.
